Alex can play a maximum of four 'sets' of solo piano - that is four hours including 10-15 minutes break during each hour. He plays mainly jazz standards. (More information on this can be found on the Style and Repertoire
Playing jazz standards on a piano gives Alex the ability to reflect the circumstances of the event, from playing sweet ballads quietly
and delicately, perhaps when people are arriving, saying hello to people etc.. to playing raucous bebop improvisations
, fast and passionate, when people are happy, confident, talking loudly - maybe after a few drinks.
Solo piano at an event, like this, can enhance the event. It is background music, but rather than being like recorded music, the pianist reflects and enhances the general mood. Applause between tunes is not expected.
Alternatively, if you have the budget, Alex can put together jazz duos, trios or quartets for your event. Combinations include:
Piano / Double Bass
Singer / Piano
Singer / Piano / Double Bass
Saxophone / Piano
Saxophone / Piano / Double Bass
Saxophone or Singer / Piano / Double Bass / Drums
For example, piano / double bass duo for something quiet - recently hired for a funeral. A vocalist led group would be more of a concert and hiring a saxophonist would be a good balance between the two. Many other instruments are available, such as jazz violin
The musicians that Alex regularly hires include some of the very best musicians in the world. He can hire them for your event for an extremely good price considering these people's vast talents and experience. They are mostly former jazz post-graduate students from either the Guildhall School of Music and Drama
or Royal Academy of Music
- considered to be the two most prestigious jazz conservatoires in Europe. However, some of the best musicians Alex uses regularly didn't actually study at music school at all.
(Alex is not an agent - instead of taking a 15% cut of their fee, he is privileged to be making music with them.)
